Getting listed at the top of search engine results
All web site owners would like to have their site listed at the top, or at least on the
first page, of search engine results. For instance, if you created an e-commerce site that
specialized in selling antique clocks, then you would want your site to appear on the
first page of the search results whenever someone used the keywords "antique
clocks." Unfortunately, since most search engines use different algorithms to index
and rank the Web pages in their databases, you cannot get your Web site to appear at the
beginning of all search engine queries.
| However, once you understand how search engines (especially spiders) use the
information contained on Web sites to index and rank them in their database, then you will
have a better chance of improving the ranking for your Web site. Since spider engines have
very little human intervention, they decide how to list and rank your site using about 7
key pieces of information, that include: |
|
| Web page title; META keyword tag; META
description tag; text on your site; keyword density; and number of other sites that link
to yours. Before you can create all of these key attributes for your Web site, you should
understand a little about Hypertext Markup Language (HTML). |
