Search Engine Resources The following links will give you a better idea of all the different types of search engines, how they work, and some tips on how you can improve your search engine rankings. The Hot 100 provides a list of the most popular, or visited, Web sites on the Internet. Although this is a listing of all Web sites, not just portals and search engines, it still gives you a good indication of which search engines are the most popular. For instance, Yahoo! was #1 in a recent listing. If you want to learn more about HTML and the different tags, try this Web site. It's home page claims that it is the best place to learn how to make a web page with HTML because "Every HTML Tag is here . Everything is written in plain English . We answer every e-mail question in less than 24 hours." This is a fun place to visit on the Magellan Internet Guide (http://magellan.excite.com) if you want to see what users are looking for. It provides "12 randomly selected real-time searches that users like you are performing" that are automatically refreshed every 15 seconds. Search Engine Tactics (v. 2.2) An online book that covers the various aspects of search engines, including: selecting good keywords; meta tags; title lines; different types of search engines; automatic submission services; and tracking your rankings. Search Engine Watch, created and edited by Danny Sullivan, has a lot of good information about search engines, including the "Webmaster's Guide To Search Engines" that covers: search engine submission tips; using meta tags; improving your placement; and how to submit URLs. Web Site Positioning Resource Center The Web Site Positioning Resource Center "provides all of the resources needed to get positioned and stay positioned," including: software, books and consulting services. Under its Computer & Internet directory listing, Yahoo! provides a wealth of information about searching the web, including: comparing search engines; how to search the Web; and articles about robots and spiders.
